Calais wine fair offers a taste tour of France

Nip across the Channel for a taste tour of France at the annual Calais wine and food fair over the weekend of 8-10 March and you can snap up special offers at hotels, restaurants and attractions.

Members of the Calais Hotels Association are offering a free second night’s stay during the fair, more than 30 restaurants and brasseries have created special menus, and many attractions are offering discounted entry.

The ‘Salon des Vignerons et de la Gastronomie’ is the focal point, staged in the town’s Forum Gambetta, and is an opportunity to sample from a vast selection of wines displayed by 60 producers from across France.

The fine food element of the fair is being extended this year to showcase the produce of regions from the four corners of France.  There’ll be a chance to taste familiar favourites from the Savoie such as raclette and tartiflette. Or give the frogs’ legs fried in butter a go.

Cooking demonstrations will be led by the avant-garde chef Mathieu Colin, who established his reputation at Le Pavillon Ledoyen, one of the most highly regarded gourmet restaurants in Paris.  Mathieu has returned to Calais, his home town, to take over Le Grand Bleu.

Entry to the Calais wine and food fair is free on production of a P&O Ferries ticket, and includes an all important tasting glass.  Short break fares on the Dover – Calais route are from £38 return for a car and all the passengers.  For ferry fares visit or call 08716 646464.  Details of the Calais wine and food fair and the special offers are at
