Sail to the sales to snap up les bargains

The clock’s ticking if you want to grab yourself a bargain in the sales across the Channel as the French government strictly controls the winter sales.

Our Gallic neighbour takes a very different approach to sales than we do in the UK.   French shopkeepers are heavily regulated as to what they can call sale stock, and it is illegal to discount goods beforehand.

“It means that price reductions have to be on normal stock.  Savings are generally between 50 and 70 per cent and ‘Solde’ is the key sign to look for. ‘Degriffe’ or ‘Remise’ followed by an amount shows the mark-down,” explains Calais shopping guru Sharron Livingston.  “In the UK the sales have lost some of their sparkle as they’re never ending.  It is very different in France where the first day of the sales was 9 January and the last is 12 February.”

If  you fancy trying to grab yourself a real bargain across the Channel this winter,   Sharron’s Calais shopping tips can be found at and getting to ‘Les Soldes’ is easy and inexpensive. P&O Ferries has up to 23 return sailings every day on its 90-minute Dover – Calais service.

Day return fares are from just  £23 for a car and passengers and a special offer that extends right through the French sales period includes six free bottles of wine to pick up on board.  The free wine daytrip offer can be booked at using the promotional code freewinedy or by calling 08716 646464 for the free wine offer.
