power in port

Port of Rotterdam environmental initiative

Our next initiative in reducing emissions is to take part in a feasibility study that will trial plugging into shore-side electricity supplies whilst our ships are in the port of Rotterdam, instead of continuing to power the ships by running generators on board.

The possibility of using electricity from a wind turbine in the port area at Rotterdam raises the prospect of a truly green alternative to producing our own power when in port.

It is hoped that the study, which we started in February 2007, will indicate technical practicalities of this approach, environmental benefits by way of reduced emissions, and possibly cost savings from reducing the fuel consumption of ships and the amount of maintenance our engines require.
