convention for prevention of pollution from ships

nothing over the side

Cleaner seas and more recycling

This international convention lays down strict regulations that range from prohibiting the dumping of rubbish over board to setting standards for the content of the exhaust gasses produced by ships’ engines.

P&O Ferries strives to go further than the basic requirements of the regulations.  For example solid waste is not only brought ashore, it is sorted for recycling into cardboard, glass and plastic, in a determined effort to ensure that the waste that does go to landfill sites is in the main biodegradable.

The company also works closely with suppliers so that packaging is kept to a minimum in the first place.  And when sending stock to supply the ships we do so in reusable tote boxes, again in an attempt to reduce waste.

Liquid waste such as cooking oil and spent engine oil is brought ashore and sent for recycling.
