Follow the sound of music in Salzburg

Salzburg was the location of the famous musical the Sound of Music.

Although guided tours are available, visitors to the city can go and see the film's locations and the Trapp family lodge independently if they wish.

The Von Trapp house is outside of the city, but all of the other sites such as the graveyard, the Abbey, the Mirabella Gardens and the squares which feature in the film are easily accessible by public transport.

Alternatively, visitors who have come on a driving holiday by ferry can drive between locations.

The Sound of Music was based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family during the Nazi occupation in the Second World War.

However, some of the details for the musical production were changed, for example Maria came to be a tutor to one of the children, not all of them and the Captain's oldest child was a boy not a girl.
