Ski advice issued

Britons heading for winter ski holidays in European destinations such as Austria or France should take care on the slopes, industry experts have said.

The Ski Club of Great Britain has suggested that skiers and snowboarders follow the ten-point international safety code to ensure they have an enjoyable and injury-free snow break.

Spokesperson for the members' organisation Betony Garner told the BBC: "We advise people to be responsible and stay in control when skiing or boarding."

The International Ski Federation has a code of conduct, which the Ski Club and the majority of specialist ski travel firms suggest holidaymakers abide by.

Showing respect for others, taking note of signals and markings, offering assistance during an accident and controlling speed are four of the key points included in the code.

This advice follows recent news that several ski resorts are introducing speed checks to further increase safety.

In a bid to encourage people to take part in lessons and practice control, Swiss Accident Insurance will hold a series of speed tests and awareness-raising events in places including Zermatt and St Moritz.
