Skiers must avoid putting themselves at risk of emergency costs by not having travel insurance for their holiday.
Those taking the ferry across the channel to ski in such a place as Austria this winter may be interested to know that 18 per cent of Uk holidaymakers hitting the pistes over the next few months are cutting costs by dropping their health cover, new figures from Esure highlighted.
Mike Pickard, the head of travel insurance at Esure, said more skiers were considering weekend breaks due to tighter purse strings and as there may be a resultant rise in the temptation to give travel insurance a miss.
"But any winter sports holiday - no matter how long the trip or how close to home - comes with a certain element of risk," he added.
Mr Pickard added: "It's crucial to ensure you're fully covered if you have an accident on the slopes."
Whether or not ferry travellers plan to take part in winter sports, the National Health Service urged people to apply for a free European Health Insurance Card to provide themselves with health cover.
