Zurich will be celebrating the lead-up to the festive season with its spectacular annual Christmas market.
Located in the Hauptbahnhof district, it is Europe's largest festive market, boasting more than 160 stalls of goodies to take back for people at home. The building is decorated with holly and bells to really get holidaymakers in the mood. It runs through December until 24th, with 6th being an extra special day when the feast of St Nicholas is celebrated.
Children are particularly welcome at the market, which lays on various activities for little ones, including the Marli of fairytale tent and carol singing, featuring a great many favourites of the younger generation.
Those looking for a shopping spree during their trip to Switzerland will be spoilt for choice, with a wide range of traditional trinkets available, not forgetting local delicacies such as St Nicholas pastries, butter cookies and Swiss chocolates. And when the evening starts getting chilly, some spiced Gluhwein mulled wine is sure to keep shoppers in the mood for festive fun.
And when you have shopped 'til you drop, take a city tour from the comfort of a bus or - if you still have some energy - rent a bicycle.
