Zurich's carnival season

Zurich will be attracting hoards of visitors as its carnival takes place in February next year.

The streets will come alive with floats, music, costumes and dancing, as the procession makes its way around the city's hot spots.

Guggen music is what the event is famed for. The genre allows musicians and those without many musical skills to come together to create their own unique sounds, with distinctive dissonant chords. But, according to WhatsonWhen, it is not as bad as it sounds.

The Guggen Monster Concert, one of the key activities in the carnival weekend, takes place in Munsterhof Square. A tent is pitched allowing party-goers to escape the cold of February and enter into a glamour carnival fairyland.

The following Saturday is the Uulumpete Balls, again filled with guggen influences. This event closes the carnival season for another year.

And when the carnival is over, there are a host of things to see and do in Zurich, famed as a great weekend getaway.

Top activities include the Swiss National Museum, the Kunsthaus and the Schipfe district.
