1st World War brought to life in Flanders

The Belgian city of Flanders is giving visitors the chance to step back in time and gain a perspective on the complexities of the 20th century.

At the Flanders Fields Museum from now until November 15th a display of First World War memorabilia will be on show.

VisitFlanders explains: "The idea is for the visitor to be gently introduced to the atmosphere of the time; quotations of soldiers and civilians alike are hung on big panels or are spoken to visitors from screens."

It notes that a selection of interactive features will also tell the stories of men and women caught up in the world-wide conflict, based on first-hand witness accounts.

Furthermore, the museum will also be showcasing the works of many poets, writers and painters from this period.

The museum specialises in this sort of exhibition, as it is named after the military surgeon John McCrae's poem about the First World War.

According to the Lonely Planet travel guide, Belgium is a nation rich in art, food, architecture and history.
