Antwerp championed

The Belgian city of Antwerp can make a refreshing change to the capital of Brussels and boasts its own unique cultural scene.

Just a short ferry ride away from the UK, Antwerp is packed with galleries including the Mayer van der Bergh Museum.

The museum showcases some of the best work from home-grown talent and is currently hosting an exhibition from Antwerp-born painter Eugeen van Miegham. Focusing on the women in his paintings, the exhibition runs until the end of the month and has proved popular with audiences since opening in October.

Visitors wishing to see more work from the painter can visit the Van Miegham Museum - also in Antwerp - which includes everything from sculptures to sketches.

The best way to explore Antwerp is by foot or on bicycle and tours taking in all of city's key attractions can be organised through the two main museums.

As well as its artistic scene, Antwerp has a thriving schedule of festivals and outdoor celebrations. Upcoming events to look out for include the Antwerp Summer Festival and the Groenplaats Beer Passion festival.
