Belgium's freedom festival

The freedom festival of Belgium, taking place in Brussels this year, will have the theme les liberates et les droits de l'etre humain – freedoms and rights of the human being.

Known for its quirkiness and dark humour, the festival welcomes people from all walks of life with all interests, who can freely express themselves at this event. It kicks off today and lasts until November 10th, and is held at La Botanique.

The festival itself is made up of concerts, film screenings, exhibitions and debates on topical issues concerning freedom.Uganda will be one of the focal points of the discussion of human rights, and the film The Ungrateful Dead: In Search of International justice will be explored the situation in the war-torn country. Other screenings will include Beyond the Wall and Nadia's Voyage. Debates will discuss the situation in Burma, issues of asylum and work rights.

Various DJs will entertain, along with music groups from around the world, many bringing personal experience of the human rights abuses the event will explore. It is hoped that the gathering will help raise awareness in the city that is home to the European Union.
