    Bommel bashing in Belgium

To avoid the post-Christmas blues, many people will be taking a trip to Belgium in January, where the fun continues into the month which is famed for being dismal in the UK.

Held in Ronse, the Epiphany celebrations see local residents take another chance for a party while they take down their decorations, reports WhatsonWhen. The most recognised figures of the festival are the Bommels, also known as the Corks.

These large model characters are dressed in spectacular outfits and go into battle with each other, much to the delight of onlookers. Events such as this make up the body of Crazy Monday, which is in fact held on a Saturday - the first in Epiphany each year. The event promises to be a great occasion for all the family to enjoy.

Ronse is located in the flat area of Flanders and is known for its Church of Saint Hermes, which became the destination for pilgrimages after the saint's crypt was said there is the 11th century.
