Those looking for a romantic break may want to consider a ferry over to Bruges, with the city getting a true acid test from a pair of honeymooners.
Angie Bailey, in a piece for the Daily Mirror, said that Bruges was regularly described as the "Venice of the North" and with its "winding waterways" and "impressive medieval architecture", she agreed with the sentiments.
Commenting on the atmosphere, Mrs Bailey added that it provided plenty of places to take in the surroundings and enjoy one of many Belgian beers, although there are "far too many varieties of beers to try in three days".
For those wanting a taste of other European influences, Bruges left many "spoilt for choice" according to the writer, who highlighted the range of top-notch French restaurants and Italian trattorias and pizzerias that "wouldn't be out of place in Rome".
This month, the Ripon Gazette reported that publicans from all over the north were treated to a trip to Bruges as a goodwill gesture for their support of a local brewery, Black Sheep in Masham.
