Those seeking an educational experience on holiday can take a trip back in time in Arles at the Antique Arles Museum.
It chronicles the history of Arles and reveals the secrets of daily life in the Roman Empire.
The museum is home to one of the most famous collections of Roman-Christian sarcophagi in the world and there is also an array of mosaics, sculptures and jewellery.
Californian reviewer artsnletters remarked on igougo.com: "The Roman artefacts are spectacular and interesting even to the casual visitor.
Everything [at the museum] was excavated in Arles. There's a wide variety of both artsy and everyday items."
A commentator called MBTraveler wrote on tripadvisor.com that the collections at the museum are "user-friendly" and the abundance of space and light allows visitors to experience them properly.
The city is a major centre in France and both poet Frederic Mistral and Christian Lacroix were born in the area.
