A flavour of antiquity at Berlin's Pergamon Museum

The Pergamon Museum is a collection of three of Germany's most important museums of antiquity.

It is made up of the Vorderasiatisches - Museum of the Ancient Near East, the Museum fur Islamische Kunst - the Museum of Islamic Art, and the Antikensammlung - the Collection of Classical Antiquities.

The antiquity section of the Pergamon museum was founded with the acquisition of a Roman archaeologist's collection in 1698 and was first opened to the public in 1830 as the Altes Museum.

Most of the collection is made up of pieces from the Greek and Roman empires including architecture, sculptures, mosaics, pottery and jewellery.

Islamic artwork from the 8th to the 19th century is on display in the museum. It was constructed between 1910 and 1930 and is one of the museums in Berlin's Museum Island quarter.

Around 850,000 people visit the museum every year.
