Germany offers "beautiful scenery"

Category: Germany news

History buffs making their way across the English Channel this winter may want to explore contemporary Germany, according to a city tourist board.

The state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Germany's first city Berlin, provides tourists with "beautiful scenery" outside of the capital as well as a large number of historical sites for people to see, according to Brandenburg Tourism Office.

It added that people could explore state secrets that were locked away until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 as the state was the home to many "spectacular" information swaps between agents from the former East Germany (GDR) and West Germany.

The marketing board continued: "The bunkers in the east of Brandenburg including a nuclear bunker in Harnekop for the leaders of the National Army were one of the best kept secrets of the GDR."

In describing the wide array of monuments in Brandenburg, the tourist agency said that Potsdam alone had 77 castles and palaces.
