Those soon wanting a short break may be intrigued by the upcoming marathon in Frankfurt this month, which will provide visitors with more than just running.
Set in the heart of Germany's technological west and the home of the EU's Central Bank, the Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon will combine a "first-rate race weekend, a marathon festival with street parties, well-known bands, a sales fair, pasta party and an athletic supporting programme".
The course will pass such monuments as the Alte Oper concert hall, the northern gate tower of Eschenheimer Turm built in the 1400s and the Festhalle, one of the biggest domed buildings in EUrope.
Intrepid ferry travellers may want to note that the registration for the event, which takes place on October 28th, closes on the October 21st online.
Frankfurt is also home to the two tallest skyscrapers in the EU, with the Commerzbank Tower standing at 259 metres tall, with its predecessor, Messeturm, just over 256 metres high.
