Saddle up for Holland's "carnival" atmosphere

Brits have been advised to saddle up and experience Holland's "carnival" atmosphere by bike this summer.

The Mirror newspaper's reporter Alan Hart says that the country is "fun, friendly and flat", making it a perfect destination for cycling enthusiasts.

He explains: "It's perfect for cyclists who want to pedal along quiet lanes past the original green power plants windmills.

"As well as building the famous dykes to keep the North Sea at bay, the Dutch also reclaimed swathes of land from their lakes."

Those wanting to bring their own bikes to Holland for their holidays can catch a ferry to the nation and take their two-wheeled transport onboard.

According to the Lonely Planet travel guide, in Holland "bikes, dykes, windmills and blazing flower fields" are all standard set pieces of the scenery.

It urges holidaymakers to make like the locals and "grab a bike and explore" the nation, which is full of "salutary surprises".
