The former prison of the Court of Holland the Prison Gate is now open for visitors, giving a glimpse into the prison service in the country from the 15th century onwards.
Torture chambers and implements such as branding irons, racks and thumb screws are on display.
According to the Hague website, the Prison Gate was the most harsh prison in the country and criminals were only sent there following the most serious offences such as forgery, murder or crimes against the monarch.
During trials, which also took place in the Prison Gate, if judges did not believe prisoners' testimonies they could send them to the torture chambers.
These days, the Prison Gate welcomes thousands of visitors a year and even offers parties for children aged between seven and 13.
It is located in one of the medieval fortified gates in the Hague.
