Bilbao an international hotspot

The Spanish city of Bilbao is an "international hotspot" for tourists seeking an alternative city break destination, one expert has said.

Its proximity to the UK and the ease of access offered by the Portsmouth ferry service makes the destination a must-visit for Britons.

Korina Miller, Lonely Planet's commissioning editor for Spain explained that an increasing number of tourists are considering break in Bilbao due to the vast number of cultural sights.

"Those after something more cultural than beach resorts and slightly off the beaten track are tuning into Bilbao's charm," she commented. "As the largest city in the Basque Country, you're also sure to get your fill of the region's unique cultural fixes like pintxos (tapas), pelota vasca (handball) and Euskara (language)," the expert added.

Bilbao also has year-round appeal, proving popular both in winter and in summer, Ms Miller concluded.

The main attraction in Bilbao is the Guggenheim Museum which includes 19 galleries and provides a packed schedule of one-off events.
