Food fight festival set to take place in Bunol

Food fight festival set to take place in Bunol An enormous and historical tomato fight is to take place in the Spanish town of Bunol this August.

The event has been taking place since 1945, when the town's children had a fight with the edible projectiles and now the Tomatina is held every year, the Spanish tourism office notes.

On the last Wednesday of August, crowds of people flock to the town to launch the soft red fruits at each other, following a breakfast in the town square at 9am.

Ammunition is fed to the townsfolk and tourists to help them take part in the messy battle but they also have to grin and bear buckets of water soaking them from above.

"Participants at this joyful pitched battle have a wonderful time throwing tomatoes at anything that moves," the tourism website enthuses.

The town is situated just under 40 kilometres from Valencia and is set in a mountainous but coastal region.
