Get juicy at La Tomatina

La Tomatina is a huge tomato fight that happens annually in the town of Bunol near Valencia on the last Wednesday in August.

Although the actual fight happens between 11am and 1pm on the Wednesday, there are plenty of other activities going on around the town.

Thousands of people gather in Bunol to get involved in the fight, where tomato lorries arrive with more than 240,000 pounds of tomatoes to use as the ammunition.

It is thought La Tomatina originated when a fight broke out between two men in 1945 at a carnival.

According to Spain-info.com, a nearby vegetable stall was caught in the action and people began throwing tomatoes at each other.

A year later, a group of young people returned to the same place with their own tomatoes to re-enact the fight.

Latomatina.org estimates that around 20,000 people come to the industrial town to get involved in the fight each year.
