Madrid is a great destination for a weekend away and has retained much that is Spanish throughout its years as a top getaway.
Winter trips allow visitors to make the most of the more temperate climate and avoid the crowds of summer. The city has great transport links and is also a scenic drive from the ferry port in Bilbao.
Those heading over for the weekend should make sure they arrive in time to enjoy Café Central's offerings which include a live jazz band popular with locals. And during the daytime, a trip to the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, with more than 200 works on display, or the Museo Nacional del Prado is well worth it for art and culture lovers.
The city's parks are also great for relaxing and taking a walk. The Retiro or the Caso de Campo are recommended spots which offer more than just a green spot to wander around.
And when you need to refuel, make sure you try some traditional paella at one of the city's countless traditional Spanish restaurants.
