Spanish holiday market is doing "extremely well"

Spanish holidays are still performing "extremely well" despite some analysts' predictions that this market could suffer as a result of the credit crunch.

The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) made the claim, adding that both mid-haul and long-haul destinations are also remaining popular with sun-seeking holiday makers.

Spain is a particularly convenient destination for holiday makers as they can reach it by plane or ferry, with the latter mode of transport enabling them to take their car abroad.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for Abta, said: "I think people were concerned that the eurozone areas would be affected, particularly with the fluctuations in currency, but that doesn't seem to have happened."

She added that in fact the entire tourist industry was looking robust, suggesting that although people's purse strings may have tightened over recent months they are not cutting back on their holidays.

Online tour operator youtravel.com reports that in March and April bookings for all-inclusive holidays rose by 70 per cent.

Furthermore, in the same period self-catering holidays experienced a 105 per cent in crease in popularity
