Spanish holidays 'have health benefits'

Heading on holiday to Spain could improve the health of Britons, according to new research.

The Mediterranean country is given as an example of a place high in sunshine - and consequently - high in levels of vitamin D.

According to research from the Journal of American Heart Association, exposure to the sun can stimulate vitamin D production which is essential in protecting humans against strokes and heart failure.

Spanish destinations such as the Canary Islands are given as possible holiday spots for those Britons keen to beat the January blues and improve their overall health.

Property firm Kyero suggests that Spain is a top destination for Britons due to its proximity to the UK and the fact that there a number of travel options - including cheap flights and low-cost cross-channel ferry services.

Martin Dell, managing director of the overseas property portal, also suggested that this news will come as an additional boost to Spain's appeal for 2008.

The Association of British Travel Agents recently revealed that Spain is generally the number one choice for Britons looking to get away over winter.
