Advice given for those taking cars abroad

Advice has been given to those thinking of taking their cars abroad, to countries such as Spain and France this week.

Motorists crossing the Channel by ferry in order to take their car abroad should make sure their travel insurance is up to date, AA Insurance said.

Ian Crowder, spokesperson for AA Insurance, explained: "It's important to have European assistance which isn't awfully expensive and is something that the AA and other motoring organisations do."

He added that having this will give travellers peace of mind as they will know that "whatever happens on holiday … then there will be somebody ... who will sort out the recovery" of their vehicle.

Research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance has revealed that around 17 per cent of holidaymakers are planning to take their car abroad over the next year.

Furthermore, nearly half of those people say they will drive more than 1,000 miles on foreign soil.
