Brits booking Spanish breaks for 2009 already

Despite the fact this year's holiday season is not yet over, Brits are already booking their Spanish breaks for 2009, according to one expert.

The Milestones company claims that large numbers of holidays in Spain and other European destinations are being booked by UK travellers who think the pound will weaken against the euro.

Matt Clapson, Milestones' general manager, said: "Bookings for popular countries are already looking strong for next year."

He added that the trend has been sparked by fears that "the global economic situation isn't going to dramatically alter in the coming months", which has caused holidaymakers to look ahead to next year.

Spain also has the advantage that it allows holidaymakers to take their cars abroad with them if they reach the nation by a cross-channel ferry.

Friends of the Earth has urged Brits to opt for greener travel options, such as the ferry, and avoid taking carbon-rich flights where possible.
