Brits told to use "greener travel alternatives"

Brits have been told to make the most of green travel options by one expert this month.

Friends of The Earth has urged the government to take action to invest in carbon-light alternatives of travel in a bid to discourage UK holidaymakers from taking flights, which are heavy in environmentally-harmful emissions.

A spokesperson for Friends of The Earth said: "Aviation is one of the fastest growing sources of climate changing emissions in the UK and no amount of carbon offsetting will change that."

The representative added that rather than supporting the expansion of airports, the government "should invest in greener travel alternatives".

It added the ministers should be researching ways to make green travel cheaper for customers.

A poll of over 1,000 voters surveyed by Flying Matters found that as the state of the economy worsens travellers are less willing to pay for the environmental cost of flying.

Furthermore, 77 per cent of those asked said the economy is now their prime concern, compared with 28 per cent last year.
