Trips to Europe could be cheaper and more environmentally-friendly for those who take the ferry, the Guardian reports.
According to the newspaper, ferries are an economic choice for families which can help them to save money on their European holidays while money may be tight during the credit crunch.
Research by the Association of British Travel Agents has said that one in ten Britons are considering taking their cars to Europe.
The association added that a revival in the driving holiday may have taken place because of recent problems with airlines, such as the disruption during the opening of Heathrow Terminal 5.
France was cited as one of the UK's favourite driving holiday destinations.
According to sailanddrive.com, ferry companies are taking pains to reduce their environmental impact. Ships produce fewer greenhouse gases per tonne for every mile travelled compared to flying, the site says.
In addition, international MARPOL regulations restrict emissions such as sulphur and nitrogen from the engines of ships.
