Ferry travel is better than flying for check-in systems, an overwhelming majority of travellers have said.
A survey conducted last month by the Port of Dover found that 80 per cent of those who passed through its gates in the summer month considered seaport check-in preferable to airport processes.
Furthermore, 90 per cent said luggage handling is easier when travelling by ferry, another 80 per cent thought seaports are more flexible than airports and 90 per cent rated sea travel's security checks as more hassle-free.
It wasn't just seaports' boarding procedures which scored well with travellers; 70 per cent rated the cost of sea travel better than flying and holidaymakers said ferries were less likely to incur hidden surcharges.
A lack of delays and cancellations also boosted the popularity of ferries with passengers, with 70 per cent saying travelling this way is less stressful than flying.
Bob Goldfield, chief executive at the Port of Dover, said: "It's clear that passengers are opting for the value for money offered by taking the car abroad, and are turning their backs on the stresses of air travel in favour of a more relaxed, enjoyable experience."
