Ferry trips help holidaymakers fight credit crunch

Going on holiday by ferry has been tipped by one credit crunch-conscious traveller this week.

Mum-of-two from Essex Linzie Banks has told her local paper the Echo that after seeing her bills rise by 40 per cent over the past three years she decided to be more frugal with her spending.

However, not wanting to forego a summer break Ms Banks decided to take a series of small holidays, including a day trip on a ferry to France.

She says that the expensive camping break her family had been intending to take abroad would have cost £2,000, making the day excursion to France a perfect solution.

Furthermore, the appropriately-named Kate Shipp writes for the Guardian this month that she took her entire family around Spain, Portugal, Morocco, France and Italy for five months for £3,000.

She achieved the feat by using the ferry as her primary form of international transport.

Ms Shipp writes: "We travelled to Santander on the ferry, then drove through Spain and Portugal, caught the ferry to Morocco from Algeciras, and drove back through Spain, France and Italy."
