Holidaymakers advised to shop around for car insurance

Holidaymakers driving abroad this year have been advised to shop around before deciding on one car insurance policy.

Comparison website moneysupermarket.com stressed that finding an insurance policy that will cover drivers, whether they are on home soil or abroad, is imperative and not something that can be overlooked.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "You can still make things easier by shopping around each year and there's other things to help your circumstances where you can get help in keeping it as low as possible."

He added that young drivers can opt to pay a high voluntary excess so that the initial cost of the policy comes down.

Drivers thinking of taking their cars abroad on a cross-channel ferry were also told to make sure they are accurate when giving the insurance company a quote about the mileage they will be doing.

According to MoneyExpert.com, more than six million people chose to switch car insurance provider over the past six months in an effort to stave off rising car insurance costs.
