Strike halts Eurostar services

Eurostar train services are currently at a standstill after it emerged that Belgian train workers had gone on strike.

The move, which has stopped the London to Brussels and Lille transport links by rail, will be bad news to the Channel Tunnel train service which spent much of September on a restricted timetable due to a fire which engulfed the tunnel but did not cause any injuries or fatalities.

In a 24-hour general strike, workers are protesting against higher living costs and the government's inability to deal with the problematic effects of inflation on the country's economy.

Those wanting to get to the continent may prefer to take the ferry to the continent instead, as many other train links to the Netherlands and Germany will also be disrupted.

Towards the end of September, the Eurostar ran into more trouble after it emerged that one of the service's trains had broken down due to an electrical problem.
