Travellers' boozy antics 'may invalidate their insurance'

Travellers heading abroad this summer have been warned that their boozy antics could invalidate their insurance policies this week.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), if a holidaymaker has an accident due to excessive larger drinking then their insurance policy may not pay out.

This could mean that any possessions they lose while intoxicated are not covered and any medical care they need may also not be paid for by their insurer.

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for Abta, said: "Most insurance policies are not valid if the cause of an accident is because of drinking. That is the conditions that they set and that is what people need to be aware of." She added that there has been a crack-down in certain destinations recently to prevent binge drinking.

According to Expedia's 2007 Best Tourist League, Brits are considered to be among the five worst nations of holidaymakers in the world.

The firm's survey revealed that Brits are considered the third-biggest holiday spenders, the meanest tippers and the second worst dressed tourists - second only to the Americans.
