Be one of the first to discover the Louvre museum masterpieces displayed in a breathtaking glass and aluminium building.
This is the motivation behind the new branch of the Louvre opening in Lens on December 12th. The choice of a former mine yard as the site of the museum had both practical and symbolic considerations. The space gave the architects unencumbered creativity over the design, and the city of Lens is very accessible- just 1h15 from Calais.
One of the most groundbreaking features of the new museum is the opening up of the storerooms. They will be both visible and visitable, so guests can see all the work that goes into maintaining and restoring the art.
Pieces will come from the core collection in Paris, and will be exhibited in an ever-changing arrangement, rather than being displayed according to set departments, so guests can have a more fluid experience of the museum.
Temporary exhibits will rotate twice per year in summer and winter.
