The renowned City of Romance, an ideal location for a cultural city break.

Bruges is the acclaimed city of romance and an ideal location for a cultural city break. Suspended in time centuries ago, Bruges is now one of Western Europe’s most visited medieval cities and picturesque market squares, dreamy canals and whitewashed almshouses all evoke a world long since past. The medieval city of Bruges is renowned throughout the world for its charming architecture and the Bruges old town resembles an island, surrounded by a ring of canals. At the centre of the island are the Markt and Burg squares, around which city life revolves. On the Markt Square, you will discover one of the city's most impressive monuments, the Belfry and Cloth Hall.

Is there a local speciality?
This is Belgium and therefore it has got to be mussels! Be sure not to forget the frites and mayonnaise though. Also when in Bruges, sample the traditional Bruges chocolate Swaentje (Swan). A Swaentje, a symbol of the city of Bruges, represents everlasting love.

Any good activities around?
Why not take a visit to the Church of Our Lady to see Michaelangelo’s Madonna & Child as well as enjoy evening entertainment at Bruges’ Concertgebouw, featuring international concerts and local performances. Another way to see Bruges is to jump on a bike or get hold of an ‘In Bruges’ movie map and follow the footsteps of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason to the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the Groeninge Museum.

Interesting town fact
Bruges was once a flourishing trading centre, home to many rich merchants who were responsible for the city’s unique architecture. Nowadays, Bruges attracts an altogether different visitor. People come from far and wide to explore the cobbled streets and old guild houses. The entire city is also now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
