UK ETA Electronic Travel Authorisation Requirements

Travel requirements to the UK are changing. The UK is moving from physical immigration documents to digital permissions, introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This is a secure, digital travel permit required for visitors to the UK.

From 8 January 2025, non-EU residents will need an ETA to travel to the UK, and from 2 April 2025, EU residents will also require an ETA for stays of less than six months. The cost of applying for a UK ETA travel permit is £16 as of 9 April 2025.

Updated travel rules to the UK

This new system is part of updated travel rules to the UK, designed to facilitate faster and more efficient entry.

If you already hold a UK visa and use a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or Biometric Residence Card (BRC) to prove your immigration status, you can access your eVisa online at gov.uk/eVisa.

Ensure your travel document is registered to your gov.uk account before departure to comply with the new rules for travelling to the UK.

If you do not need a visa for short stays of up to six months, you must obtain a UK ETA travel permit. You can check when an ETA is required and apply at gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation. The ETA is essential for travelling to the UK as a non-EU resident, but British and Irish passport holders are exempt.
