OFF-SEASON ACTIVITIES IN BRUGES
BACH ACADEMIE IN JANUARY
Few cities can count as many eye-catching architectural feats as Bruges, and it's also home to a thriving music scene. Stemming from a radical church reform in 1517, music as we knew it evolved within these city walls, and you can learn all about it in a series of events hosted by the Bach Academie.
Starting in January, indulge in the musical richness of Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach, along with a jazz regeneration by saxophonist Robin Verheyen.
WINTERVONKEN IN FEBRUARY
The fourth edition of this winter festival once again guarantees scintillating street theatre, atmospheric concerts and heart-warming fire installations set in the Burg square - the cultural beating heart of Bruges.
A yearly extravaganza falling in February, this is the perfect chance to see Bruges at its best, with aerobatics, theater performances and stunning light displays.
A top class gallery famous for its remarkable collection of 18th and 19th century Flemish works, wander into the imagination of the great Belgian painters of the past at the astounding Groeninge Museum. One of the city's biggest draws, the halls of this famed gallery are noticeably less crowded in the winter months, so you can enjoy the internationally renowned masterpieces of Jan van Eyck in peace.
A hundred years ago, this part of Flanders saw some of the fiercest battles of the First World War. Today, the scars of those battles still remain, through cemeteries with gleaming white headstones, memorials, and craters left by mine explosions. Together with some superb museums, and events such as the Last Post Ceremony (each night at 8 o’clock at the Menin Gate in Ypres), it makes for a unique experience, and it’s just a short distance away from Bruges. It’s easy to reach (and to drive around) by car, or there are a number of tour companies offering full day excursions, picking up and dropping off in Bruges.
BRUGES BEER FESTIVAL IN FEBRUARY
One of Belgium's biggest beer festivals, a secret location in the heart of Bruges will hold host to more than 70 brewers, offering over 300 different beers. Running across two days in the first week of February, this is the perfect chance to taste a true Belgian specialty in the beautiful old-world setting of this medieval city.
