Family Holidays in Germany

Germany is the perfect place to transport the whole family into a fairy tale world – or even make one yourself. But even if you’re not a fan of Cinderella or Snow White, the country provides a plethora of activities suitable for all ages, from the world’s biggest model train set to one of Europe’s favourite theme parks.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed break wandering through beautiful scenery or a hands-on exploration of science and technology, you’re sure to find the perfect family holiday in Germany.

Discover the Home of Fairy Tales

As the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, and with much of their story collection originating in the country, Germany has long been considered the figurative home of fairy tales. But visit the sprawling forests and intricate architecture of the same era and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into one yourself. The Fairy Tale Road is a 370-mile signposted route from Hanau to Bremen that passes through the picturesque countryside, quaint villages and brooding woodland that saw the origin of many famous characters.

Stop at Steinau to visit the Grimm home, see the house of the Pied Piper in Hamelin, or watch one of the shows or parades that regularly take place along the route. Perched atop a hill of trees, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria served as Disney’s inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s home, and is sure to delight princess fans and history lovers alike.

Learning and Inspiration in Berlin

There’s no better place to immerse the whole family in knowledge than in the German capital. You’ll find state-of-the-art museums on every topic under the sun, with Museum Island providing the setting for many family favourites.

The Deutsches Technikmuseum is a fantastic stop for the inventors in the group, with exhibits including everything from wartime locomotives to how to make a suitcase. Take your inspiration to the adjacent Science Centre Spectrum, where plenty of hands-on experiments and interactive shows will feed the whole family’s creativity.

Be sure to also stop at Miniatur Wonderland – the world’s largest model train exhibit. There mini planes, ships, cars and, of course, trains travel through amusing scenes set in real cities.

Amusement Parks for all Ages

The largest theme park in Germany, Europa-Park in Rust is one of the most popular in Europe. There you’ll find immersive entertainment to suit all ages, from enchanted castles and miniature trains for the little ones, to thrilling rollercoasters for the young at heart.

Märchengarten in Ludwisburg is another stop the whole family will love, where beautiful scenery, picturesque boat rides and intricate animatronics will transport you through your very own fairy tale. Little ones will also love seeing their toys turned into giants at the incredible Playmobil Funpark near Nuremberg.

Explore the Great Outdoors

Those looking for an idyllic outdoor adventure should head to the famed Black Forest in south-west Germany, which offers a huge number of activities against a fairy-tale backdrop. Many areas in the mountainous region have buggy-friendly walking trails, as well as plenty of nature parks, farmyards and forests to explore.

Stuttgart lies around 1h45mins from the heart of the Black Forest, and its outdoor attractions make it another great stopping point for families. Set on the grounds of an old castle, Wilhelma is a historic zoological-botanical garden that has roughly 11,500 animals from all over the globe.

Alternatively, the forest climbing trails of Waldklettergarten Stuttgart are the perfect energy burner before finishing the day with an interstellar trip at the Carl-Zeiss-Planetarium.
