Cycling holidays in the Black Forest

Keen cyclists will love the Black Forest as exploring this part of Germany by bike offers the perfect way to see the sights. There are a number of multi-stage routes that you can choose from which take between five and eight days if you want to get a feel for the whole area, or plenty of shorter routes if you want to see small sections at a time.

One of the most popular week-long routes starts and ends in the historic town of Freiburg. From here, you can take in a scenic section of the Upper Rhine, visit the interesting town of Basel, cycle through forestry, pass through thermal spa towns, and even spot a few castles en route too. You can take your bike with you when you travel to the Black Forest with us, but if you don’t have a bike you can easily rent one when you get there.

Visit Triberg Waterfalls

Triberg Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in Germany, and a visit here is one of the best things to do in the Black Forest. The waterfall is set slightly away from the town of Triberg, and you can watch in amazement as water cascades down naturally made steps from a height of 163m. For a small fee, you are able to follow a winding path to the top of the waterfall where there is a bridge that you can cross – giving you a new and exciting perspective.

The Black Forest is a great place for hiking, and as Triberg Falls is the most accessible waterfall in Germany, it’s a popular choice for those exploring the area on foot. The path itself is easy to navigate for most, although it isn’t suitable for those with pushchairs or wheelchairs. Triberg Falls are open to guests all year round, and you should be prepared to be sprayed by the falls when you visit! Once you’ve finished exploring, head into Triberg for a slice of delicious Black Forest cake in one of the town’s many bakeries.

If you’re exploring the Black Forest as a couple, Lake Titisee is not to be missed. Take a walk around the beautiful lake before treating yourselves to a drink or an ice cream, or opt to hire a boat and take in your stunning surrounding from the water. Travelling as a family? Lake Titisee has plenty to keep the kids entertained too. From tobogganing and waterslides to climbing and swimming, this picturesque spot offers something for everyone.

Visit the spa town of Baden-Baden

Once you’ve hiked and cycled your way around the Black Forest, head to Baden-Baden – a lovely spa town which is fed by 12 hot springs. Here, you can soak away any aches and pains and let your troubles fade away at one of a number of spas, including popular thermal bathhouses; Friedrichsbad and Caracalla Spa. Indulge in a few treatments and enjoy all of the benefits that natural thermal springs offer before heading off on your next adventure.

During your time in Baden-Baden, take some time to explore some of the town’s parks and gardens. This part of the Black Forest is wonderfully green, and there are a number of outdoor delights to discover. If you only have time to take a walk through one park, opt for the lovely Lichtentaler Allee. Created in the 1800s, Lichtentaler Allee boasts a wide variety of plants, impressive trees, picturesque bridges over the River Oos, and its very own dahlia garden.
