Perhaps the most famous activity in the area is the chance to delve into the Marble Arch Caves, which form a major part of Northern Ireland's only designated UNESCO Global Geopark. Formed 895 million years ago, these magnificent limestone caverns need to be seen to be believed. For those interested in history, head to the county town of Enniskillen. The 600-year-old castle here boasts two museums: the Fermanagh County Museum, which covers local life through the ages, and The Inniskillings Museum, dedicated to the area's military past.

Further enjoyment can be found exploring some of Northern Ireland's grandest houses like the 18th century Georgian marvel Florence Court, as well as the lavishly decorated Castle Coole with its ornate state bedroom, a residence specifically decorated to accommodate a visit from King George IV.

Unspoiled lakelands

It's impossible to overstate the natural beauty of Northern Ireland's stunning Lakeland region, so it's essential for any visitor to get out onto the water to see it with their own eyes. Dominating much of the landscape are Upper and Lower Lough Erne, two lakes which are actually dramatically widened sections of the River Erne. The closest to the region's capital of Enniskillen is Devenish Island, which is home to the remarkable ruins of a 6th century medieval monastic site. A sporting paradise

Cyclists in particular love the numerous impressive trails that weave through forests, past castles and around the shore of Lough Erne. The most popular route is the 230-mile Kingfisher Trail (named after the birds local to the area) which is ideal for both short and long trips.

If you're looking for something a little less demanding though, Lough Erne is considered one of the finest coarse fishing waters in Europe, thanks to its abundance of bream, roach, pike and perch.
